Meaning: Taking Flight
A child labor and sex-trafficking prevention initiative.
Udaan, meaning “taking flight,” is our child labor and sex trafficking prevention initiative. It was born out of a simple but urgent belief: if we can reach children before traffickers do, we can change the course of their lives.
Today, we operate three Child Development Centers in Bhiwandi and Govandi in Western India, and in Bithari along the India-Bangladesh border. Each center has been intentionally created as a safe, beautiful, and welcoming place where vulnerable children can learn, grow, eat, play, and simply be children again.
Many of the children we serve come from heartbreaking circumstances. Some once worked in garbage dumps, scavenging for plastic, metal, and anything they could sell for less than 50 cents a day. Others worked in hazardous industrial environments far too dangerous for any child. Many are surrounded by poverty, exploitation, and instability, making them extremely vulnerable to child labor, sex trafficking, and child bride trafficking.
Udaan exists to step into that vulnerability with love, protection, and hope.
Our focus is the holistic development of every child. Inside our centers, children are welcomed into classrooms, computer labs, beauty salon training spaces, tailoring centers, play areas, and dining spaces. They are taught by trained professionals, mentored with care, and encouraged to discover their gifts. Every day, they receive quality education, engaging activities, warm encouragement, and two nutritious meals—often the only meals they will eat that day.
But Udaan is not only about education. It is about dignity. It is about helping a child who once believed survival was the only option begin to imagine a future filled with possibilities. It is about replacing fear with safety, hunger with nourishment, shame with confidence, and hopelessness with dreams.
We also know that lasting transformation must reach the whole family. Through our Moms’ Empowerment program, we regularly conduct workshops for mothers and parents on health and hygiene, parenting, literacy, and the importance of education. Many mothers have never had the chance to be encouraged or equipped themselves. But when a mother is strengthened, she becomes a powerful protector and advocate for her child’s future.
Again and again, we have seen that empowering a mother can help keep a child in school, out of dangerous labor, and away from the reach of traffickers.
Udaan is transforming communities one child, one mother, and one family at a time. In places where children were once at risk of being forgotten, they are now being seen, loved, educated, fed, protected, and prepared for a brighter future.
Udaan means taking flight—and every day, our children are learning to rise.
Join us as we help vulnerable children spread their wings and take flight into freedom, safety, and hope.
